LEPROSY CARE and SUPPORT’
For more than 19 leprosy colonies – Muniguda is the Railway Station they come to. Many travel at night, without tickets and sit in the corridors of train bogeys. The stigma of leprosy is less but still exists.
NEW HOPE UK has always been involved and supportive of the need to give health and social care to persons affected by or suffering from Leprosy. (Socially now often called Hansens Disease – this naming does not really give depth to the medical disease that has ‘for ever’ and so many languages simply meant LEPROSY – a disease that in most places and still in too many parts of India caused social stigma, ostracization and a fear in families when a member is diagnosed with leprosy. When Jill Ghanouni came as a volunteer she saw that when the medical team of New Hope rode to one colony and stopped at the junction to have a traditional cup of tea they were served at a side window and not allowed to enter the main Tea Stall – simply because they were working in a leprosy colony often 350 people.
We can still use the phrase ‘on the other side of the railway line’ – All 12 of the colonies that we support – mainly with feeding/meals are still in that isolated area situation. The majority are now aged and many disabled. Going out to the nearest town to beg four and five times a week is their only source of ‘income’. Our support is to ensure that the very aged and severely deformed have at least 2 meals a day.
Through donor support we also try to have ‘weekly’ meals for all in the colony. This means ‘a day break from begging’ for those who survive this way. This going out to beg is very organized (it has to be and many are begging for their ‘partner’ who is unable to go begging due to deformity and age.

First the Ulcer healing process in our Ulcer Ward at the Muniguda Hospital.
WE have been working in Leprosy Colonies since 2009 issuing measured correct size sandals post ulcer healing. Without the protective foot wear the ulcer would re-occur. This is a major input for leprosy affected persons. (On right is our ‘cobbler’ – a qualified shoe technician now. Bhakhi grew up with New Hope at Namaste House and a severely deformed Poli orphan child.

Leprosy Colony Celebration Meals – Donation
One-off Donation. A joint meal celebration is prepared for one of our Leprosy
Colonies. Choose a special date that is important to you for the celebration.
We will prepare the food, which would be local to the area and location of the
colony. New Hope will forward photos and a report to you about the special
celebration day.

A gift of items that simply improves the quality of lives of able and in particular the disabled. For many this GIFT is the only way that will get a replacement of an old Sari or for men a shirt. It ensures that have a bedsheet or blanket
